Breaking barriers and embracing inclusion: A day in the life of Jordy

December 3, 2023 – Today is the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. It’s a day that serves as a reminder for the importance of disability inclusion in upholding human rights and sustainable development. The participation and leadership of people with disabilities not only promotes inclusion in our local communities, but opportunities for all.  At Ahold Delhaize, the inclusion of people with disabilities is a priority and we strive to be reflective of our communities both within our offices and brands' stores.

At our great local Dutch brand, Albert Heijn, we were able to learn more about Jordy through their recently released documentary: More than a supermarket ("Meer dan super"). It provides a unique look at what goes on behind the shelves and how Jordy – a committed and hard-working stock replenisher at the Albert Heijn XL in Maastricht – was told at the age of thirteen, that he was not cut out for the regular labor market. Today, he has an important role at one of Albert Heijn's major and busiest stores. Without Jordy, customers would not be able to count on Albert Heijn.

Jordy tells his story, “I attended a special education school. Back then, the prospect seemed that I would never be able to have paid employment and that I would only be able to do so much. Eventually, I was able to prove the opposite. I showed that I have more potential. That I could achieve more. And my supermarket manager, Ron, has been a great help to me since I started working here."
