Recognizing the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia

Zaandam, the Netherlands, May 17, 2022 – Since 2004, people across the world recognize the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia (IDAHOT) annually on May 17. It was created to draw attention to the violence and discrimination experienced by lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex people and all other people with diverse sexual orientations, gender identities or expressions, and sex characteristics.

May 17 was specifically chosen to commemorate the World Health Organization’s decision in 1990 to declassify homosexuality as a mental disorder.

Therefore, today represents a major global annual event to draw the attention of decision makers to the alarming situation faced by people with diverse sexual orientations, gender identities or expressions, and sex characteristics. At Ahold Delhaize, we believe that, as retailers playing a significant role in society, we have a responsibility to set the right example and help dismantle structures that systematically disadvantage some and advantage others. We believe in and practice promoting inclusion, compassion and an end to all forms of discrimination – every day. We do not tolerate any form of discrimination.

To understand the importance of today, we had the opportunity to speak to Luuk Hoekx, Specialist Capacity at Albert Heijn. Luuk was willing to share his experiences with discrimination and what it means to him. Read how Luuk has faced and courageously handled discrimination in his life below and how he contributed to founding Ahold Delhaize Pride – alongside his colleagues Bart Vermeulen, Sven Bentum and Frits Kesting.

''During my time in high school, I faced a lot of discrimination because of my sexuality that often led to bullying. Although I shared my experiences with my teachers and the school board, they did not provide me with the appropriate support I needed. Being the only person in high school that openly explored their sexuality was tough and that reality continues to impact my life. It contributed to my feelings of worthlessness and led to a period full of personal struggles.

These days, I’m stronger than ever before and I embrace all parts of my identity. A couple of years ago I joined the board of the Homomonument in Amsterdam, the first monument in the world for all LGBTQI+ people who are persecuted or are faced with violence. I think it's important that we continue to stand up for our rights, but also celebrate our freedoms! The Homomonument is about commemorating our past and celebrating our future.

I still remember the day I came to work with nail polish on, as well as the day I hung the rainbow flag during Pride. Although I received a lot of questions and funny looks – maybe seeing something outside the box is all it takes to start a conversation and in this case it did! I was able to have fruitful discussions with my colleagues and I was able to help found Ahold Delhaize Pride. I hope to be able to talk more often with other colleagues about these subjects. I would like to advocate for LGBTQI+ rights, but above all I think it is important that everyone feels safe and comfortable at work.

Looking back at my own experiences and struggles, my dream is to help our young colleagues to immediately feel safe and welcome at Ahold Delhaize and our great local brands. Let’s celebrate the future!''

Ahold Delhaize completely supports Luuk’s actions and wishes and encourages all associates to step up if they witness discrimination at work. Everyone deserves the freedom and safety to be able to be themselves, anywhere at all times. We have various resources available to do this, including but not limited to our Speak Up Line or initiating a conversation with a manager or a confidant at work.
